Welcome to the "Captain J. A. ShultzMemorial Lifer's Group
The Lifers Group was started in the early 1990's At the Sumter Correctional Institution (SCI) in Brooksville, Florida by Captain J. A. Shultz, Karen (Montgomery) Potts, an Education Supervisor, and 9 Inmates with Life Sentences. These 9 men were never going to be released, short of a miracle. However, they wanted to do something Good with their lives. They saw these other men coming into prison, leaving, and coming back again and again. So they decided they wanted to try to help these younger men by teaching them what they could in an effort to help them go out and make Good Decisions, stay out of prison, and live healthy productive lives. These three State Employees agreed this would be a worthy cause, and agreed to help these 9 men establish some structured programs to help the younger inmates. They taught these men how to facilitate the programs to others. The first programs were "Basic Life Skills", such as Anger Management, Stress Management, Decision Making, and Goal Setting. It was obvious these younger men needed to understand why they were on the path of destruction, and also needed someone to believe in them, and teach them How to make the changes they needed to make within themselves. This program was an instant success. Many of the younger men with short sentences enrolled in these programs, and the change in attitude, knowledge, and understanding was amazing. This program grew in the number of Programs offered, Inmates that wanted to help others, as well as the number of younger men seeking to change the course of their lives. Soon, the "Lifers Group" formed a structured club, with it's own bylaws, membership rules, and a leadership board. It wasn't long before the news of this successful club reached the top levels within the Department of Corrections (D.O.C.) in Tallahassee. They started inviting these top level DOC staff, Corporate Business men and women, and Judges to banquets to participate in awards ceremonies, and success stories, as well as future goals. Today, the Captain J. A. Shultz Memorial Lifers Group is known throughout much of the state of Florida. They have continued to grow, to add new programs, and even started a Comprehensive Tour Program for Juvenile offenders that were only a small step from prison if they didn't change. This Juvenile Tour has been so successful that in many cases tours are booked by various agencies two years in advance. Sumter has two units. They have the Main Unit and the work camp called Sumter Forestry Camp. We are now the official ministry handling the donations for the Sumter Forestry Camp. They can receive things like copy paper, black ink cartridges for a Cannon BJC 250, Maxwell House Coffee, Creamer & Sugar, sports equipment, and musical instruments such as Guitars & strings, drums, microphones, amps, etc. If you would like to consider donating something, please contact us first so we can get it approved prior to you sending the item(s).
