Phase I
J & K Ministries is
a Christian Faith Based Ministry. We have developed a comprehensive
Pre-Release Program that we have been facilitating within the Department
of Corrections (DC) for more than (6) six years.
We recognize that many inmates
coming out of the prison system are not prepared to re-enter society. Many
lack basic's such as good communication skills, the ability to set goals, handle
anger and stress, to develop healthy relationships, and to get a good job and
keep that job.
We have found that a meaningful
Pre-Release Program must include the following basic programs:
Communications
The tools to speak and hear with understanding.
Goal Setting
The tools to be able to define what you want and
all the steps it will for you to achieve that end.
Decision Making
The tools to choose
the best action and to follow through with that action to completion.
Anger Management
The tools to be able to
recognize valid and distorted anger.
Stress Management
The tools to control
your words/ actions under tension in a productive manner.
Handling Hostilities
The tools to control
your actions and achieve a productive outcome for all concerned.
Time Management
The tools to manage
your time and not have time manage you.
Budget Planning
The tools to handle
your money in the most efficient way.
Identifying Danger Flags
The tools to be able to
recognize negative triggers within ourselves.
Developing Healthy Relationships
Learning to identify 'Hand-Me-Downs'
within yourself & others.
Job Search Tools (including interview module)
The tools to be able to
prepare a resume', to locate job openings, to prepare for
an interview, and how to keep the job.
We have developed a comprehensive
program that incorporates all of these items. The goal of this program is
to prepare each participant to be able to re-enter society with the necessary
basic tools to be positive productive role models.
We have facilitated this program
within the Lifers Group at Sumter CI. We believe
that every man and woman in prison should have the opportunity to get the basic
tools they will need before they are released into society. Although our
workshops (We refer to them as Tool shops) are non-denominational, we believe
that the spiritual aspect is vital to developing character, and accountability.
Without these tools, the statistics confirm that the average inmate has less
than a 30% chance of staying out of trouble, and out of prison.
Phase II
This phase involves ensuring that
there is a realistic Action Plan for each participant. An action plan
consists of developing a plan for where they will be living and developing a support system that
includes specific needs such as AA or NA,. It would also include an accountability person.
Depending on how long the inmate has been incarcerated, they will be coming out
to a very different world. That can be very scary, and intimidating.
If the inmate will be staying with friends or family, this program also includes preparing
those they will be going home to, so they will be informed about their support
role. The support and accountability person needs to have healthy expectations, and
understand how to
not be an enabler. They also need to know what restrictions will need to be
followed for probation.
